This is a prequel retelling of Disney's Beauty and the Beast told from the cursed Prince's own perspective, tracing his life as a vain, cruel young noble before three mysterious witch sisters transform him into a monster. The novel fills in his friendship with Gaston, his failed engagement to another woman, and the slow, painful process of learning compassion through Belle. It folds familiar beats from the animated film into a darker, more melodramatic backstory aimed at a young adult/middle-grade audience.
