Set in a fantastical version of Victorian London, this novel follows Dodger, a teenage "tosher" who scavenges the city's sewers for valuables, after he rescues a mysterious, badly beaten young woman from two attackers. His act of heroism pulls him into a web of political intrigue involving real historical figures like Charles Dickens and Benjamin Disraeli, as he works to protect the girl, known as Simplicity, from the powerful people who want her silenced. Along the way Dodger also tangles with the murderous barber Sweeney Todd and rises from the gutters toward unexpected fame and fortune. It's a witty, fast-paced historical fantasy-adventure rather than a traditional romance.
