Set in early-1980s communist Poland, this literary debut follows Ludwik, a university student who falls into an intense first love with the more politically compliant Janusz during a summer work camp. As the pair's lives diverge—one drawn to dissent, the other to the safety of working within the Party—the novel traces how desire, shame, and political upheaval pull at their relationship. Narrated retrospectively as a series of reflections addressed to Janusz after Ludwik has emigrated to America, it is as much a meditation on freedom and identity as it is a love story.
