Faris Nallaneen, the orphaned teenage Duchess of Galazon, is packed off by her scheming uncle to the elite women's college of Greenlaw, ostensibly to be finished as a proper young lady but really to keep her out of his way. There she discovers Greenlaw actually trains witches, and that her education in magic becomes tangled up with international intrigue, a mysterious young man named Tyrian, and a plot that eventually drags her back home to confront her uncle's ambitions. It's part boarding-school story, part Ruritanian political adventure, set in a gently magical alternate Edwardian Europe.
