A grumpy, duty-bound corsair pilot named Mathiras sets off on a dangerous solo mission to track down the criminals behind an illegal human-cloning operation, only to find his sunny, sheltered clone companion Helen refusing to be left behind. As they journey together through hostile space, the forced closeness between the hardened warrior and the innocent but surprisingly resourceful Helen slowly turns into something more. The story blends found-family sci-fi adventure with a slow-building romance between two very mismatched personalities. It continues the alien-pirate world built in Ruby Dixon's earlier Corsair books.
