A gothic, sapphic retelling of J. Sheridan Le Fanu's 1872 vampire novella, told from Laura's point of view as she falls for the mysterious, affectionate Carmilla in an isolated Styrian schloss. The story follows the original's beats of illness, suspicion, and a deadly plague among local young women, but reframes the central relationship as an explicit, consensual romance rather than a cautionary tale. It keeps the atmospheric, gothic horror trappings of the source material while giving the central couple a markedly different resolution than Le Fanu's classic.
