Joe Goldberg, a Manhattan bookstore clerk, becomes instantly infatuated with aspiring writer Guinevere Beck when she wanders into his shop, and uses her social media trail to insert himself into her life. Told in unsettling second-person narration from Joe's point of view, the novel traces how his 'devotion' curdles into obsessive control, manipulation, and violence as he works to eliminate anyone standing between him and the woman he's convinced is his soulmate. It's a dark, often blackly funny psychological thriller about stalking, social media surveillance, and toxic love, later adapted into the Netflix series of the same name.
