Beatrix Hathaway, the free-spirited youngest Hathaway sister who is more at ease with animals than ballrooms, begins ghostwriting letters to a soldier serving in the Crimean War on behalf of a friend. As the correspondence deepens into real emotional intimacy, the soldier, Captain Christopher Phelan, returns home changed by war and must reconcile his feelings for the woman he believes wrote those letters with his growing attraction to Beatrix herself. The story follows their path to love as Christopher struggles with the psychological aftermath of combat and Beatrix works to help him heal.
