Set during the mysterious lost year referenced throughout earlier books in the series, this installment splits its time between Eleanor hiding out at her mother's convent and Kingsley wandering the world after their painful parting from Søren. At the abbey Eleanor finds an unexpected, destabilizing connection with a young novice, while Kingsley's grief leads him to a Haitian beach and a woman who changes him. The book toggles between past and present as the three central characters finally reveal to each other what really happened during their year apart. It's a BDSM-infused, emotionally heavy entry that fills in a crucial piece of the trio's long, tangled history.
