Picking up where Nightshade left off, Farryn is trapped in Infernium, the feared asylum said to be a gateway to hell, while Jericho races to free her before the darkness growing inside her consumes what's left of her humanity. The story digs further into Jericho's traumatic past and the wider mythology of the realms, forcing the couple to confront old enemies, buried secrets and their own capacity for obsession and revenge. It's a heavier, more harrowing conclusion than the first book, pushing both leads through repeated trauma before letting them land somewhere settled. Readers who loved the first book's slow burn and world-building generally find this a fitting, if darker, close to the duology.
