Alex is sent to a training facility meant to perfect obedient servants but designed, in truth, to break him, while Josiah works to bring two killers to justice and vows to protect the man he loves. The book alternates between Alex's harrowing past at this facility and the escalating danger of the present, forcing both men toward a painful reckoning with what has been done to Alex. Alex has lived a life of abuse for many years and he has had absolutely no recourse. It ends with another unresolved cliffhanger heading into the finale.
