Phury, the gentle, guilt-ridden twin of Zsadist, has taken a vow of celibacy and is forced into the role of Primale, meant to father children with dozens of Chosen females to preserve the vampire race. He brings his reluctant First Mate, Cormia, back to the Brotherhood mansion, but his drug addiction and self-loathing keep him from truly opening up to her. The book is as much about Phury's battle with addiction and self-destruction as it is about the slow, uneven courtship between him and Cormia, set against the Brotherhood's ongoing war with the lessers.
